Marking Your Equipment
Since bands tend to perform at venues with other bands (sometimes as many as twenty or thirty other bands -- see "The Overbooked Benefit" for more information), it's incumbent on you to clearly mark your equipment. Clearly marked equipment will eliminate any confusion in the event of a load-out mix-up, or (as is often the case) theft masquerading as "a mistake." Never ever stencil your band's name on your equipment. Stencils are embarrassing. Especially when your band breaks up. (See also, "Why Band Logo Tattoos Are Always A Bad Idea.") Instead of stencils, use markings of a more organic nature. Examples include: a rip, a tear, or a carefully arranged collection of stickers (displaying logos of alcoholic beverages, effects pedals, clubs from other towns, etc.). The organic marking serves as a much more dignified indication of ownership, and is indisputable.

While some may consider smells to be a marking of sorts, it is advisable to explore other more visually oriented forms of identification.
